My Ballet Paintings

Lilac Dreams

Lilac Dreams 2014

Yesterday I finished painting a ballerina in lilac costume and called it “Lilac Dreams.” Perhaps subconsciously I was dreaming of the intoxicating perfume of lilacs at this time of year. Lilacs do not grow here in Hong Kong and I miss them. Lilac is also one of my favorite colors. I actually have several leotards, a warm-up shrug, legwarmers and a wrap skirt in this color! Anyway, it was fun to go back to painting after a long break of three years! To be able to complete this piece means the world to me , as I did an outline sketch more than a month ago before my major surgery. It was my hope that I would get to finish it during my recuperation. I did!

Below, you can see two more ballet paintings I made back in 2011. The “Full Moon Ballerina” is a collage of my painting set against a background that is a photo I took of the full moon, seen right outside my bedroom window. “Arabesque” was my very first attempt to use the software “Art Rage” to paint.

Although there is still a lot of room for improvement, I think I have made some good progress in my painting technique—a compensation for the big regression in my ballet technique! While I cannot dance with my feet at the moment, I try to dance with my mind and my hands 🙂

What do you think?

  1. I do not know the first thing about art, therefore I can just tell you I like your paintings. I am a new follower, so I did not know about your surgery, but I am sending you my best wishes. I hope you will feel better soon.

I love lilac, too. The lilac season this year was early and short, it’s nearly over now. When I was a child, my parents had a garden out of town, where they grew fruit and vegetables but also lilac. The perfume was so strong it sometimes gave me headaches. I do not get these headaches any more, so now I can fully enjoy the colours (from white to dark violet) and the perfume. I do not own a garden, but there are two parks where I live, which I visit as often as possible.

    • Thank you for your well wishes, Paulina. I had a surgery about five weeks ago and am on the mend. But I can’t go back to ballet class just yet!

I didn’t know lilac could give people headaches… but someone did tell me that indoor narcissus flowers could do that too. I’m glad you can enjoy lilacs now. Yes, I have seen lilacs in a full range of colors and I love every one of them! Now I can only go back to my pictures and imagine how wonderfully they smell!

  2. I love the first painting, Lilac Dreams! I don’t know what that position is called but it really reminds me of when Canadian ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir take the ice in the warmup. Your paintings are beautiful,, I hope to see more.

    • Thank you very much for your compliments! I am not familiar with ice skating and don’t know if the movements share the same names. This particular one is called “retiré” (the movement of lifting the foot from the ankle to the knee of the standing leg is called “passé”). Let me look up those ice skaters 🙂
